There are 4 parts to telling your story. Once you start opening up about YOUR story, people can feel like they have a safe space to tell theirs. THAT'S when you start learning from others, helping others, etc. I learned a lot of this from my mentor and it has helped me tremendously in how I communicate and connect with others.
